cape arago lighthouse picture

The Cape Arago Lighthouse is just south of Charleston, OR and is visible from a lookout 1/4 mile south of the Sunset Bay campground entrance.   The 44 ft tower was constructed in 1934 replacing two earlier structures built in 1866 and 1908, both of which succumbed to the weather and erosion.  Not open to the public.

( update - i have a photo now from a more recent trip... just need to get it posted )

Tillamook Rock Lighthouse lies 1.2 miles off the coast near Seaside, OR.  The 62 ft high tower sits 133 ft above see level on a basalt rock islet.  Exposure to storm waves led to its nickname "Terrible Tilly".  Commissioned in 1881 to help guide ships entering the Columbia River, it was replaced by whistle buoy in 1957.  It was among the most remote and least hospitable light stations in America.  Now privately owned columbarium (storage place for ashes of the deceased). No public access.
